AT&T Joins With Peers and Tech Partners to Speed Up 5G Standards Development

AT&T is engaged in preliminary discussions with China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, KDDI, LG, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Qualcomm, Samsung, SK Telecom, Telstra and Vodaphone to collaborate on development of industry standards for next-gen 5G wireless broadband technology. The goal is to add momentum to 5G deployments in the wake of the initial release of the first official 3GPP 5G technical specification, which is slated to occur in June 2018.

  

Broadband Forum Virtual Residential Gateway Specification Taps NFV

The Broadband Forum recently announced the release of a new virtual residential gateway specification that the forum says will bring the benefits of network functions virtualization (NFV) to the home. Embedded in customer premises equipment (CPE), the Network Enhanced Residential Gateway (TR-317) will enable service providers to attach new services directly to an end-user’s home network gateway from centralized Cloud platforms.

  

FCC Releases ACAM Final Version and Starts 90-Day Clock

On August 3rd, the FCC Wireline Competition Bureau released the final version of the ACAM cost model that establishes the model-based support available to rate-of-return carriers that elect to accept model-based support.  Carriers have until November 1, 2016 (90 days) to indicate, on a state-by-state basis, whether they elect to receive model-based support.  

  

MIT Researchers: Megamimo 2.0 Could Boost Wireless Data Rates Three-fold

Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) believe they have a potential solution to the wireless spectrum crunch, an issue that has grown to warrant the attention of President Barack Obama and the White House. The researchers call their solution MegaMIMO 2.0.
