Powerline Carrier Projected to Play Major Roles in Smart Grid and Smart Cities
Although the idea of delivering broadband over electric power lines never really caught on, powerline carrier (PLC) technology is seeing strong growth in support of the smart grid, indoor networking and smart street lighting, according to research firm Technavio. A Technavio global powerline carrier forecast calls for a compound annual growth rate exceeding 9% through 2020.
Nokia Bell Labs Demos XG-CABLE 10 Gbps Over Coax
Nokia Bell Labs said it had achieved a world first by downloading and uploading data at a rate of 10 Gbps over coax – specifically the hybrid fiber coax infrastructure typically used by cable companies. The achievement was made using XG-CABLE technology during a Nokia Bell Labs proof-of-concept demonstration.
Sigfox Bets Big on LPWAN for IoT, Targets 100 Cities
French company Sigfox is betting big on low-power WAN (LPWAN) technology to support the Internet of Things (IoT) here in the U.S. The company plans to expand its LPWAN for IoT footprint to include 100 U.S. cities this year. Sigfox networks already are up and running in 18 countries and connected to more than 7 million devices, according to Sigfox.
Gigabit WiFi Spectrum: Another Report Recommends Sharing with Auto Industry
Gigabit WiFi could get a boost if the U.S. government heeds recommendations from a growing number of parties to make new spectrum available for WiFi use on a shared basis with the auto industry. The potential gigabit WiFi spectrum is in the 5.9 GHz band, which is adjacent to spectrum in the 5.8 GHz band that is already used for WiFi.
