ABI: 80 Million Smart Thermostats Will be Connected to Smart Grid by 2022

ABI Research foresees a convergence of sorts in the smart home and smart city markets. For example, the company sees 80 million smart thermostats connected to smart grid controllers by 2022. There is so much commonality between smart city and smart home initiatives that perhaps it is inevitable that they will either converge or compete – and perhaps the former is more likely than the latter.

FCC Notice Outlines Qualified Bidders for Upcoming CAF-II Auction

The upcoming FCC CAF-II auction will distribute $1.98 billion over the course of ten years to broadband carriers who agree to bring broadband service to identified unserved and underserved markets across 20 states. The FCC released the names of 220 applicants who qualified as bidders for the upcoming July 2018 auction auction 903.

3GPP Approves Stand-alone 5G Standard

The move to 5G continues as the 3GPP TSG plenary meeting approved the stand-alone 5G standard known as Release 15. According to Kyocera Corp., the release of the most recent standards sets up the industry for the final dash toward commercialization of 5G. The latest specs means service providers will be able to do independent 5G deployments as well as deployment of end-to-end 5G network architecture.

IDC: PC and Laptop Sales Decline Accelerates

As consumers continue to rely more on their smartphones for what had been traditional computing uses, they are buying fewer PCs, laptops and even tablet computers, according to a new report from International Data Corporation (IDC). The PC and laptop sales decline will be 3.5% this year, an acceleration of the 2.7% drop between 2016 and 2017 and continuation of a trend expected to continue for at least the next five years, researchers said.
